Pitman, NJ Pediatric nurses will explore challenges in the field and changes for the future at the Pediatric Nursing 22nd Annual Conference in Dallas, TX, September 14-16, 2006, at the Hyatt Regency Dallas. This year’s conference, New Horizons in Pediatric Nursing, features innovative programming, cutting-edge topics and an expanded focus on advanced practice roles.

Experts will lead education sessions on such topics as assessing and treating childhood depression, managing minor burns in an outpatient setting, benefits and risks of bariatric surgery in adolescents, emerging infectious diseases and their impact on pediatric health care, nutritional intervention for obese children and adolescents and developing a mobile health clinic program for uninsured children.
Among the featured speakers are Barbara Dossey, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN, director, Holistic Nursing Consultants, who will present the opening plenary session; Marilyn Hockenberry, PhD, RN-CS, PNP, FAAN, director, Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Research and Evidence-Based Practice; and Beth Ulrich, EdD, RN, CHE, vice president of professional & editorial services, Nursing Spectrum/NurseWeek.
Pre-conference Workshops
Two pre-conference workshops are scheduled for Wednesday, September 13 and Thursday, September 14. Pediatric Nursing Certification Review: Unlocking the Door to Success will take place over two days (September 13-14) and will prepare nurses for the certified pediatric nurse (CPN) exam with test-taking strategies, pediatric nursing content review and study tips. (This pre-conference workshop is worth 17.4 contact hours.)
Through the Looking Glass: Chronic Illness in Childhood (September 14) will explore developmental, family and school issues that may affect the health and well-being of children with chronic illness. The workshop will also look at difficulties transitioning to adulthood. (This pre-conference workshop is worth 8.7 contact hours.)
Program
Barbara Dossy will host the opening plenary session “Florence Nightingale Today: Healing, Leadership, Global Action” on Thursday, September 14. Dr. Dossey will link Florence Nightingale’s legacy and her tenets of healing, leadership and global action to pediatric nursing and health care.
Dr. Hockenberry will deliver the plenary session “Developing a Culture for Evidence-Based Nursing Practice” on Friday, September 15. The session will provide an overview of essential components of the evidence-based practice process. That same morning, Dr. Ulrich will present the plenary session “Work Environments That Attract and Retain RNs: What RNs Have and What They Want.” Participants will learn how RNs view the work environment and how the work environment influences the nursing career.
Renee Manworren, MS, RN, C, CNS, pediatric clinical nurse specialist, Children’s Medical Center Dallas, will deliver the plenary session “Pain Management: Controversies and New Horizons” later that afternoon. Joy H. Penticuff, PhD, RN, FAAN, Lee and Joseph Jamail Professor, University of Texas, will deliver the plenary session “A Little Boat in a Big Ocean: A Metaphor of Ethical Practice in Pediatric Nursing” on Saturday, September 16.
On Saturday, September 16, from 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., participants may attend two one-hour concurrent sessions or one two-hour learning intensive.

Special Events
The 22nd Annual Pediatric Nursing Conference will offer attendees opportunities to participate in educational and career-enhancing activities as well as interactive and social events.
On Sunday, September 17, the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board and the Pediatric Nursing Conference will offer the Certified Pediatric Nurse (CPN) Examination at the Hyatt Regency Dallas. Exam registration is separate from conference registration and can be completed online at www.pncb.org.
The Poster Session on Friday, September 15, will feature selected peer-reviewed abstract submissions and clinical posters exemplifying innovative practice and programs. Participants also have an opportunity to discuss ideas for articles and receive feedback on manuscripts in a Manuscript Development Consultation with Pediatric Nursing Editor Veronica Feeg or Associate Editor Judy Rollins.
In the Exhibit Hall, more than 45 exhibitors from around the country will display their products and information services. This event also provides opportunities for participants to network with other pediatric professionals.
On Friday, September 15, attendees are invited to tour Children’s Medical Center Dallas. Participants will enjoy a cocktail reception and a tour of the Medical Center, one of the largest pediatric providers in the nation that houses more than 50 pediatric specialty and subspecialty programs.
